ARTIST CALLOUT
Living Room. Kingsley Holt, Staffordshire
Live & Local are offering an artist opportunity for a Living Room Project which will be taking place in Kingsley Holt Staffordshire. Live & Local Living Room Projects were born out of the pandemic and were micro residencies bringing artists and communities together to create something meaningful for the community with a lasting legacy. Initially these projects included many virtual elements due to the constraints of lock down. Although there is no longer a need for artists to work remotely we are always interested to explore how artists may want to engage with communities remotely if this enables wider engagement with harder to reach sections of the community.
Background to the Project
Kingsley Holt is a village in the Staffordshire Moorlands. The local Methodist Chapel had been a well-loved community venue and when the Church decided to close and sell the hall, the community came together to fund raise to buy the building for the community. It has been a long and difficult journey and although the centre is well used and great resource for the community there is still much to do for the committed volunteers to bring the building up to its full potential. The work goes on.
The Trustees would like to work with an artist who will engage with the volunteers, users of the centre and the wider community to tell the story of how the hall was saved, what it means to people who use it now and look to its future. It is envisaged that the outcome of the project will be in a digital format that can be hosted on their website but could also have elements in a hard copy format or a “Memory Book” that the community can add to as the centre and its community grows and strengthens. The group however is keen to work with the chosen artist to develop ideas.
Type of artist
The project would suit a writer/storyteller and/or illustrator or film maker or photographer who can engage users of the centre, the Trustees, volunteers and the wider community to help them tell and illustrate their stories in a celebration of the journey to bring Kingsley Holt Centre to life.
You should also have experience of working and engaging with local communities especially within a rural area.
Your support networks
An initial online meeting will take place with the group leaders, the artist and Live & Local to set the scope and timescale of the project and confirm roles and responsibilities between the artist and the community and the expected final outcome.
Trustees of the Centre will be your main contacts in developing and running the project.
